Another short documentary that I also enjoy watching when I feel like I need some motivation or inspiration is called "Art Angel" and was produced by The FADER. "Art Angel" follows singer/ producer/ artist Grimes. Grimes produces all of her music, videos, album covers, and more by herself. This documentary shows a behind the scenes look at how she produces her music and the concepts behind her album "Art Angels." She also talks about what/who "Grimes" is and how she has evolved in pop culture.
The video starts out showing clips of Grimes from past events in her career, out on the road, on a photoshoot, etc. and uses a glitching effect when transitioning between the clips. This glitch effect makes a lot of sense because it fits with her music, which is mostly electronic and focused around technology and science fiction. Most of the video is a sit down interview, where she discusses the reasons why she makes all of this on her own. She explains wanting her music to be so digital that it feels "less tangible and less real." This gives her the freedom to take risks and try different personas in music. We also see a Skype interview with Pan, a Taiwanese rapper who features on one of Grimes' songs. The video is very visually interesting at the end because we see clips of her performances and travels in the midst of glitches of video and audio, all while her song plays in the background. I think it also is a great example of making an effective documentary in about 5 minutes.
The coolest part of the video is when a clip of Grimes during a performance that was shown at the beginning of the video continues on from the place where it was paused in the beginning. It gives a the feeling of pausing a live performance to learn more about the artist behind it all and then once you've discovered a little bit more about her, the performance can then continue.
I think the major takeaway from this video is the editing and effects that are applied really fit with the voice and theme of the subject. The audio, the glitches, the setting where the interview happens, and the closing title screen all fit the vibe that Grimes has. I think this is important to really paint the picture of who the profile is about and the kind of artist she is. These types of effects probably would not work for a country singer, for example. I believe that Grimes probably had a hand in how the final product would look in order to make sure that it fit with the "brand" that Grimes is.
